Demodex mites are microscopic organisms that live on human skin and within hair follicles. While typically harmless, these mites can become problematic when their population grows unchecked. Two species are known to affect the eyelids:
- Demodex folliculorum: The larger of the two species (0.3-0.4mm), these mites reside in hair follicles, consuming epithelial cells and causing micro-abrasions. This can lead to hyperplasia and keratinization of the skin, with a strong association to blepharitis.
- Demodex brevis: Slightly smaller (0.2-0.3mm), these mites burrow into the sebaceous and meibomian glands, blocking secretion pathways. This blockage can lead to chalazia and contribute to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), initiating a cascade of inflammation and discomfort.
Both species are known to carry bacteria such as Streptococci, Staphylococci, and Bacillus oleronius, which can exacerbate inflammation and irritate the ocular surface further.

- Collarette dandruff around the lash line
- Redness and swelling of the eyelids
- Itchiness or a burning sensation
